Pianetta Winery, located in the heart of Paso Robles, is a family-owned estate known for producing small-lot, hand-crafted wines with a focus on quality and sustainability. Founded by the Pianetta family, the winery has become renowned for its commitment to expressing the unique terroir of the region. Pianetta’s portfolio focuses on a range of red varietals, with a particular emphasis on Bordeaux-style wines, including Cabernet Franc. The winery blends old-world traditions with modern techniques, creating wines that are both approachable and complex. With a focus on maintaining the balance between nature and winemaking, Pianetta Winery continues to produce wines that reflect the passion and dedication of the family behind them.
Pianetta Winery prides itself on its intimate approach to winemaking. Caitlin Pianetta, the winemaker, is hands-on throughout every step of the process, from vineyard management to the final bottling. This attention to detail ensures that each bottle of wine reflects the unique characteristics of the region. With a focus on red wines, Pianetta wines express the true essence of Paso Robles, offering rich, bold flavors and a sense of place that stands out in every sip.
The winery is located 15 miles north of Paso Robles in Indian Valley and was established in 1997 by John Pianetta. The original vineyard was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, however the estate now includes Petite Sirah, and Petite Verdot. The estate vines welcome the daily sunshine and afternoon breezes allowing the fruit to hang on the vines longer and ripen fully. Pianetta wines are known for their well-balanced profiles, with a solid fruit base and aging in tight-grained oak barrels to highlight the best characteristics of the vineyard’s produce.
The face of the winery is Caitlin, John’s daughter. Caitlin whose enthusiasm for wine is infectious. Caitlin is deeply involved in the winery’s operations, contributing to both vineyard management and winemaking. You can find her in the tasting room located in downtown Paso Robles along with her adorable dog, Millie, who is always looking forward to snuggling up to the guests as they enjoy a glass of Pianetta Cabernet Franc.
2021 Pianetta Cabernet Franc (SRP: $42)
The wine is 100% Cabernet Franc from Lockwood Valley Vineyards located in Monterey County. The fruit was harvested in mid-October and bottled at the end of July. The wine was aged in oak for 20 months. The Cabernet Franc fruit comes from 35-year-old vines in the San Antonio AVA of Southern Monterey County. The vineyard produces low-yielding, small berries. Pianetta has sourced fruit from this vineyard since 2018, and despite the low yields, it consistently delivers outstanding quality and flavor. This Cabernet Franc is a fan favorite in the tasting room and has a suggested aging potential of 8 – 10 years. (ABV: 14.5%)
This wine has a clear, medium ruby color and medium aromas of black currant, blackberry, clove, and nutmeg. The palate features medium-plus acidity, strong integrated tannins, and a medium body. Flavors of black cherry, vanilla, and minimal bell pepper are present, with a medium-plus finish.
Pianetta Winery will be celebrating Cabernet Franc by being visible on social media, including Facebook and Instagram posts.
