Cabernet Franc Day is right around the corner, and I’m thrilled to celebrate one of the most dynamic and expressive grapes in the wine world! This year, I’m highlighting outstanding producers who bring the distinctive essence of Cab Franc to life in their wines. These winemakers are passionate about showcasing Cab Franc as a varietal that stands confidently on its own, delivering wines with finesse, depth, and character. From bright and fruit-driven profiles to more earthy and layered styles, the versatility of this grape is truly remarkable. Let’s dive into the stories and wines of these talented producers and toast to the well-deserved spotlight on Cabernet Franc!

Mira Winery, established in 2009, gained its name by the Latin root for “miracle” and the Greek word for “destiny.”  Mira Winery is dedicated to crafting wines that authentically express the essence of Napa Valley. This commitment begins in the vineyard with natural farming practices and extends through fermentation with a minimalist approach and aging exclusively in 100% French oak barrels. Mira focuses on single-vineyard, 100% varietal wines, ensuring each bottle reflects its unique origins. As a family-owned winery, Mira takes the time to make thoughtful decisions at every stage—from tank to barrel to bottle. Wines are released only when they fully embody the grape’s character and are ready to enjoy, yet they are crafted to evolve gracefully over time, offering memorable tasting experiences both at release and years down the line.

2018 Mira Hyde Vineyard Cabernet Franc (SRP: $95)

The Cabernet Franc was sourced from the renowned Hyde Vineyards, established by Larry Hyde in 1979. Spanning over 200 planted acres across multiple properties in Carneros. Grown in one of Napa Valley’s coolest region, the fruit benefits from the Petaluma Gap’s cooling influence. Morning fog and afternoon breezes create warm days and cool nights, extending the growing season for optimal ripening. Awarded 93 points by James Suckling, this wine is a true testament to its exceptional terroir.

The wine is clear and displays a medium ruby hue. On the nose, it offers clean, medium-intensity aromas of violet, spice, blackberry, and graphite. The palate is dry with high acidity, medium tannins, and a medium body, showcasing flavors of black currant, blackberry, and cocoa. The wine concludes with a long, lingering finish.
