I am so honored to share my latest television segment with you. March is Women in History Month. The celebration began in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L 97-28. This resolution requested that President Reagan recognize the week beginning March 7th as Women’s History Week. In 1987, the National Women’s History Project, petitioned Congress to designate the month of March as Women’s History Month. The goal is to celebrate the contributions in various fields that women have made throughout history.
The first recognized woman winemaker in California was Hannah Weinberger. After her husband passed in 1882, she became the first female winery owner and winemaker in Napa Valley. She ran the winery until its closure in thanks to Prohibition in 1920.
Sadly, only 38% of all California wineries are owned or co-owned by a female and only 20% of California wineries have women in leadership positions. This is in contrast to Australia, where the percentage is 38%, while in France approximately 33% of wineries have females in lead positions and Italy having 25%. My previous segment on Rias Baixas talks about how over 50% of the winemakers are females.
In this segment, I spoke with host, Emily Erwin about women in the wine industry and was honored to share Dracaena Wines’ Chenin Blanc which was awarded Best of Class and a Gold Medal in the LA Invitational. Additionally, we briefly discussed the history of Cabernet Franc as we sipped on 2018 Dracaena Wines Classic Cabernet Franc which was awarded a Gold Medal in the San Francisco Chronicle and 92 points in Wine Enthusiast.
