The countdown is on to celebrate one of the wine world’s most dynamic and captivating varietals! This year, I’m thrilled to highlight some remarkable producers dedicated to showcasing the true essence of Cab Franc. These winemakers share a common vision—that it’s far more than a blending component, but rather a standout varietal capable of delivering elegance, complexity, and depth. With styles ranging from bright and fruit-driven to earthy and structured, Cab Franc offers an impressive spectrum of expressions. Join me in discovering these exceptional wines and raising a glass to a grape that truly deserves its time to shine!

Known for their elegant and expressive Cabernet Franc, Dracaena Wines has gained a loyal following among wine enthusiasts and critics alike. The brand’s commitment to quality and passion for the varietal has made it a standout in the Paso Robles wine scene.

Lori and Michael’s first vintage  was in 2013. In 2015, they created the now internationally recognized wine holiday, Cabernet Franc Day, celebrated annually to honor this versatile varietal. 2022 Dracaena Wines Reserve Metz Vineyard Cabernet Franc (SRP: $55)

The 2022 Dracaena Wines Reserve Metz Vineyard Cabernet Franc is a single-clone, single-vineyard wine that showcases the exceptional quality of fruit from the Metz Vineyard in Paso Robles. This limited-production wine is crafted with great attention to detail, highlighting the unique characteristics of Cabernet Franc.  The wine is a true expression of the terroir, focusing on purity and complexity, making it a standout in Dracaena’s portfolio.

Fruit for this wine was harvested from the Metz Vineyard in the Estrella District of Paso Robles. The region is a distinctive wine-growing region located in the southern part of the Paso Robles AVA. Known for its warm days and cool nights, the Estrella District benefits from a unique combination of climate and soil that produces exceptional wines. The soils in the Estrella District are rich in minerals and well-drained, allowing for excellent vine health and fruit concentration.

The Reserve Cabernet Franc is crafted from Clone 1 (also known as French clone 327) that was imported to Foundation Plant Services from the Chambre d’Agriculture de la Gironde, France. Recognized for its low
yields, intense dark fruit flavors and increased richness and mouthfeel; when paired with the vineyard’s soil, sun exposure and microclimate Dracaena Wines felt it was the ideal choice for their Reserve.

The wine is deep ruby in color, this wine immediately catches the eye with its vibrant hue. Upon bringing it to your nose, you are greeted with a tantalizing blend of aromatics including black cherry, lavender, tobacco
and milk chocolate. As you take your first sip, the flavors of plum and black cherry dance on your tongue, perfectly balanced with hints of cinnamon for a delightful complexity.
