Cabernet Franc Day is almost here, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate one of the wine world’s most versatile and captivating varietals! This year, I’m highlighting some outstanding producers who craft wines that truly showcase the distinctive personality of Cab Franc. These wineries share a passion for proving that Cabernet Franc is far more than a blending grape—it’s a star in its own right, capable of delivering wines with elegance, complexity, and depth. Whether vibrant and fruit-forward or earthy and structured, Cabernet Franc offers an incredible spectrum of styles. Join me in exploring these exceptional producers and their remarkable wines—let’s toast to the grape that’s ready for its time in the spotlight!
Stiekema Wine Co. heart, soul and passion is a one man show. Michael Stiekema, founder and winemaker, has thrown his entire self into this Central Coast winery. With over 13 years in the wine industry and a BS in Viticulture & Enology, Michael combines expertise with a deep sense of purpose to craft exceptional, approachable wines. Accompanied by his dog, Ziah, (who is too cute!) he embraces sustainable and regenerative practices to reflect balance and harmony in every bottle.
Originally from South Africa, Michael’s wines are all small-batch and extremely purposeful. His slogan of “The manifested chaos of science and art,” truly describe the wines. His vision extends beyond winemaking—he aims to foster spiritual and environmental balance by connecting people to the land, themselves, and each other. Through intentional practices and community engagement, he creates wines that honor natural cycles, promote well-being, and inspire others to savor life’s sweetness in every glass.
2022 Stiekema Wine Co. Springbok (SRP: $42)
Although, his original focus was on GSM (Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre,) He couldn’t resist the call of Cabernet Franc. The fruit was harvested from the Irick Vineyards in the Creston district of Paso Robles and was aged on French oak for 22 months. The wine is called spring bok, named after the South African animal known for its agility; a medium-sized antelope which derived its name from Afrikaans and Dutch, meaning “jumping buck,” which reflects its distinctive behavior.
Michael chose this name for his 100% Cabernet Franc, because of its relationship with the South African rugby team. Adopted by the team in 1906, it is one of the oldest traditions in international rugby. During apartheid, the Springbok emblem became a divisive symbol, often seen as representing the exclusivity of the sport and the regime’s policies. After the end of apartheid, Nelson Mandela famously wore a Springbok jersey during the 1995 Rugby World Cup final as a gesture of unity and reconciliation. This act helped transform the emblem into a symbol of national pride and unity. Today, the springbok remains a prominent emblem, symbolizing excellence, determination, and spirit; a perfect symbol for Michael’s wines.
The wine is clear and displays a pale garnet color. On the nose, it offers clean and pronounced aromas of plum, cherry, and sage. The palate is dry, with medium acidity, strong tannins, medium alcohol, and a medium body. Flavors of black currant, cherry, leather, and vanilla are bold and well-integrated, leading to a long and satisfying finish.
Stiekema Wine Co. will be celebrating #CabFrancDay with a feast! Smoked meats, oven baked potatoes, and grilled vegetables are graciously prepared for all those who are hungry and they won’t be stingy on the wine pours either.
