Altitude & Attitude: Reaching New Heights this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching. Although many images of the day include a romantic table for two overlooking ocean views, I’m proposing a different view. Wine filled glasses ready to clink and born at 1,800 feet above sea level.

Alta Colina (Spanish for ‘High Hill’), is located in the rugged Adelaida District of Paso Robles. It takes a certain ‘Attitude’ to farm these steep, shale-filled slopes, but that struggle produces wines with incredible depth and heart.

The story of Alta Colina didn’t start in a vineyard, but rather in the tech-driven walls of Hewlett Packard. Bob Tillman, the founder and “Founding Winemaker,” spent 35 years as an electrical engineer. Bob was living the quintessential dual life. By day, he dealt in devices and components; by night, he was a dedicated home winemaker. Still obsessed with nuances but this time of Rhône varieties.

This technical obsession with Rhône varieties became more than a solo hobby; it became a shared dream. In 2003, Bob and his wife, Lynn, traded their Silicon Valley life for 130 acres of rugged, undeveloped dirt in Paso Robles’ Adelaida District. While others might have seen these steep, shale-covered slopes as a logistical nightmare, Bob’s engineering mind saw potential. He wasn’t just looking at a view; he was looking at a geological goldmine to those who aren’t faint at heart.

Geological Gold

Of the 130 total acres, only about 31 acres are actually planted to vine. This small plot ratio is intentional. The potential of the property lies in its extreme topography and the specific soil beneath the surface.

The definitive character of Alta Colina is written in the terroir long before the grapes ever reach the cellar. At its core, the estate is defined by its fractured siliceous shale soils. This is a stark contrast to the deep, rich valley floors. In this rocky, unforgiving terrain, the vines are forced to struggle, driving their roots deep into the mountain to find water. This natural stress dictates a specific kind of fruit: smaller, more concentrated berries with thick, resilient skins. This geological tension is the secret behind the deep color and intense, muscular structure that characterizes the wines from this site.

Sitting at one of the highest points in the region, the vineyard acts like a massive lung. During the day, the peaks breathing in the unfiltered California sun, providing the heat necessary for perfect ripeness. However, once the sun sets, the vineyard is hit by the Templeton Gap effect. The cool maritime breezes drive through the mountain passes from the Pacific Ocean to “flash-chill” the vines. This dramatic temperature swing preserves a vibrant natural acidity, ensuring that even the boldest mountain fruit remains balanced, refreshed, and full of life.

A Place to Root: Why Alta Colina is the Ultimate Valentine’s Pour

In the world of viticulture, there is a concept that the most beautiful wines come from vines that have had it the hardest. It’s a poetic irony that transfers remarkably well onto the human heart. As you pull the cork on a bottle of Alta Colina this Valentine’s Day, it’s worth considering how the “Altitude and Attitude” of this high-hill vineyard mirrors the very things that make a relationship endure.

In a world looking for instant gratification, both viticulture and love require a defiant kind of patience. When the Tillmans first planted their 31 acres of Rhônes, they weren’t looking for a quick harvest; they were looking for a legacy; true love. The wines are a living history book of the weather it has survived. Some seasons bring the relentless heat of the Adelaida sun, while others bring the biting chill of the Templeton Gap winds. A great wine—and a great romance isn’t defined by the perfect days, but by how it handles the “chilling ones.” Weathering the seasons together means staying anchored when the climate shifts. It’s the ability to take the external pressures of life and turn them into character, much like the vines at Alta Colina take the wind and the heat and turn them into vibrant, balanced fruit.

The High Hill & The Downslope: Two Expressions of One Love

When you look at these two bottles, you’re looking at two different perspectives of the same mountain. The 2022 GSM is the “heritage” anchor of the estate, pulling from the most rugged, high-altitude blocks where the vines have been weathering the elements since the beginning. It is a wine with a long memory. Because it grows where the wind is harshest and the soil is thinnest, it possesses a structural elegance and a polished complexity that feels intentional. It’s a wine that reminds us that depth and longevity are earned through time and resilience. It’s the perfect bottle for a love that has already proven it can stand the test of time.

Conversely, the 2022 Downslope Red captures the “young at heart” spirit of the vineyard. Born from the lower reaches of the hill where the vines enjoy a slightly gentler existence, this wine is crafted for the here and now. It trades the dense, serious “grit” of the peak for a personality that is approachable, energetic, and completely carefree. It doesn’t ask you to wait a decade or overthink the moment. It simply offers an immediate, bold view into the life of the vineyard. It is a celebration of the spontaneous side of love. The kind that finds joy in the present and doesn’t need to spend a lifetime to know its true.

The Spirit of Alta Colina

Alta Colina doesn’t dominate nature; instead it works in total harmony with it. Since 2013, the estate has been farmed organically, a commitment that ensures the 130 acres of wild Adelaida hills remain as vibrant and healthy as the wine they produce. By opting for regenerative practices and “no-till” farming, they protects the very shale and soil that gives their wines such a distinct sense of place.

But the best way to experience the heart of this hill is to spend a night on it. Alta Colina is home to a Trailer Pond, which is a collection of boutique vintage trailers nestled right against a spring-fed pond in the middle of the vineyard. It’s a place designed for “unplugging”where the only thing on the agenda is watching the sunset hit the high-altitude peaks while clinking your glass with your love.
